I work on a web 2.0 application for my day job. It isn’t even a web 2.0 site since it basically has 1 web page with a bunch of script tags on it. I mean a shit load of script tags. 40. Until today.

Every now and again I'll actually meet someone who realizes that you don't need a JavaScript framework to make full-scale AJAX applications happen... but rarely in the Microsoft community. Most people think you need Prototype, jQuery, or ASP.NET AJAX framework in order to do anything from networking calls, DOM building, or component creation. Obviously this isn't true. In fact, when I designed the Brainbench AJAX exam, I specific designed it to test how effectively you can create your own full-scale JavaScript framework (now how well the AJAX developer did on following my design, I have no idea).

I come from the world of corporate software development. It may not be the most glamorous side of software (it’s nowhere near as interesting as shrinkwrap startups or those fancy-dancy Web 2.0 companies that show up in your browser every time you mistype a domain name), but it’s stable, pays well, and has its own set of challenges that other types of software development know nothing about.

A standard debugging tactic when developing Active Server Pages (ASP) is to use Response.Write statements to display troubleshooting information to the screen. With the release of Visual Studio .NET and its accompanying step-through debugger this practice has (thankfully) become obsolete in ASP.NET. However, once an application is deployed to a web server the debugger cannot be used without installing Remote Debugging, a practice frowned upon by system administrators due to security issues. One way to bridge this gap is to use a built-in .NET tool called Tracing.

Recently my team discovered a limitation in the RelativeDateTimeValidator that ships with the Enterprise Library Validation Application Block. This validator is used to check if a DateTime object occurs within a configured time before or after Now. It’s a useful validator for checking things like birth dates and expiry dates. However we discovered that it assumes the date being validated is in local time – if the date is specified in UTC (which we do in our app) the calculation will be wrong.
