Which CSS Grid Framework Should You Use for Web Design?

"Ever wondered how all those slick "magazine" themes for WordPress and other platforms were created? Many, if not all, were designed using a CSS Grid Framework - at least in essence if not in actual fact. That is, you can use an existing CSS framework or build your own from scratch. While it's possible to design complex web page layouts without a framework, it's arguably an act in masochism. In this article you'll get an overview of the current batch of Frameworks and which you should choose to use."

Why not PHP for Google’s App Engine?

TechCrunch is announcing Google’s new “App Engine” service being launched this evening. The basic service is a full app stack hosted and managed by Google, providing a web framework (maybe I’m misreading this?) and the Google ‘big table’ database service. The web stack is Python, but there’s no word I’m seeing on whether it’s plain Python or if it’s based on an existing Python framework (like Zope or Django or something).

When one builds out many designs with HTML and CSS, one finds that there are a handful of the same of problems you solve each and every time. Among them: Resetting browser defaults to create a blank slate. Setting up layout and baseline grids for your design to adhere to. Creating sane defaults for type sizes, alignment, and spacing. And more. Wouldn’t it be handy to have this stuff taken care of ahead of time, so you can get to the really fun stuff designers love?

Among them: Resetting browser defaults to create a blank slate. Setting up layout and baseline grids for your design to adhere to. Creating sane defaults for type sizes, alignment, and spacing. And more. Wouldn’t it be handy to have this stuff taken care of ahead of time, so you can get to the really fun stuff designers love?

Having done both some real world Rails development and a lot of real world Java development, I have accumulated some experience, that I would like to share. In particular about where rails fails to deliver for me.

I should start by saying, that I like Rails on a lot of areas. But we also know, that all technologies and tools have a flip side, which we come to know about only by using it for some time.

Immature developer attitudes revealed in flames regarding CDBaby

Derek Sivers of CDBaby kicks ass. He got a sophisticated and very very user-friendly, efficient, straightforward e-commerce system (including the back-end systems) written in PHP. Based on what I’ve read, he’s up there with Phil Greenspun in my opinion; that is, he’s among those who understand strategy and customer service and low-level technology and are able to build systems that don’t suck, resisting the temptation to be distracted by technological panaceas and fads. I may disagree with their individual technology decisions, but their higher-level thinking is excellent, so they’re definitely in the class of people who I’ll give the benefit of the doubt.
