I feel that the major rule with AJAX is to be consistent. If one tree has AJAX, then all should have it, same with search boxes, tables, filters, etc... And try to resist the urge to go back to previous projects with an active userbase and add AJAX in without it being a requested feature....the userbase will have a mental model of how it all works, and will not take kindly to you pulling the rug out from under their brain...
I have to agree. The whole Ajax phenomenon increases the challenge of making effective, facile user interfaces. More than ever the programmer and the desisgner will need to be coordinated to create a functional (and truly useful) user interface. It isn't any easier now than it ever has been - just look at all the crappy software out there!
