Writing great software is not that hard. But software developers can be their own worst enemy in trying to code the good stuff because they lapse into sloppy or wrongheaded practices.

so wrong. great software engineers have built great software using no unit tests, no version control, no continuous builds/deployment, etc. this article is just a bunch of buzz words. seriously.

Sure, and a "great" Space Shuttle engineer *could* build a Space Shuttle with a set of Craftsman hand tools from Sears, an old barn, a Lincoln 200W arc welder, an oxy-acetylene torch, a few coat-hangers for brazing material, and a 1973 Ford Pinto as a base. But for 9999999 out of 10000000 people, if they told you they were going to build a Space Shuttle with a set of Craftsman hand tools from Sears, an old barn, a Lincoln 200W arc welder, an oxy-acetylene torch, a few coat-hangers for brazing material, and a 1973 Ford Pinto as a base, your reply would (correctly) be "you're an idiot." Yes, you can overcome not using proper tools if you're creative enough, stubborn enough, and talented enough. But intentionally choosing to handicap yourself by forgoing proper tools is braindead stupid.

There is also a fundamental difference between a single developer project and a multi-developer project.
