Some good tips but you don't need RoR to learn them, vote down for flame bait.

Vote up, but almost a vote down. If you learn anything from Rails it's that the Convention over Configuration point gets rid of the need to write your own stuff. Sure, you can (and sometimes you have to), but the whole point is to get to work, not to write yet another templating engine. While you're writing that, your competitors are solving your customer's problems.
