A not-so-serious post, wondering what developers listen to, if anything, while they code. Also the question is raised, though silly, about whether different types of programmers listen to different types of music.

Depending on my mood, it's one of the following:

When I need to really be productive:
Pink Floyd
Orbital (or other techno)

Typical day:
misc goth/alternative rock (paradise lost, radiohead, garbage, etc)

Pink Floyd and Dire Straits for when I need to concentrate,
Metallica or Faith No More if I'm trying to drown out co-workers or doing something repetetive,
Bad News if I need a good laugh, and I'm procrastinating...

I listen to sports radio actually. Used to listen to music, but found that it was too distrcating to anyone who came into my office.

Good old anonymous European techno, boring old house, or ambient.

Oh, or the ever-classic Yatta! by Green Leaves (over and over and over ...)

Either nothing or I purposely guide pandora.com to drift across genres as much as possible. It's a great way to not get bored with your music collection (that I got bored with a long time ago).

I know I'll never live this down but -- Enya or similar foreign new age where the words aren't understandable. The ambiance is soothing but not distracting which is what gets me going.

At particularly difficult points I'll turn it all off though and get rid of as many distractions as possible.

Nothing when I'm fresh and need to focus on some hard problem.
Vangelis Oceanic when I need to work for a long time, to get me started.
Energizing music (like Samael - Reign Of Light) when I'm exhausted but need to keep on going.

Anything in between in the rest. Nothing that has deep meaning for me, that is to distracting.

A lot of chiptune stuff. Remixes of videogame music (http://www.ocremix.org/), Beck, Lemon Demon, NPR Podcasts (All songs considered, All things considered, Press Play)

full on drum'n'bass gets my fingers clickin'

can't listen to anything with much vocals, otherwise I start typing it into the code.

I usually listen to goth and electronic industrial.

Sisters of Mercy
Leather Strip
Neutroticfish
Gossamer
Aslan Faction

To name a few.

Between the comments here and left on the blog..seems like the most listened to genre is non vocal - instrumental soundtrack, electronic, or techno (assuming those last 2 are mostly vocal free..maybe they arent..i dunno). Interesting...guess most of us do get distracted by voices when we code.
