It's a tough job in your average QA department - lack of respect, little power, no praise, fear of being laid off, how much motivation would you have every day?

Maybe we disrespect them because they use terms like "button thingy"

Our QA department is actually pretty good... sometimes they can forget things, but we all do. So I do feel lucky.

I've always thought that tension between dev and qa was a good thing, though painful at times.

Back when I worked at HP, I created our QA dept. motto: "We're not happy until you're not happy." This went against all the lip service that was being paid to having QA as an integral part of the design process, but I've always felt that being too close to the design process meant you were too likely to miss the same bugs the designers did. Ideally, a good QA engineer should have much the same mindset as a good hacker - seeing the thing under test as a puzzle to be solved with few, if any, instructions.
