Here's my list of 7 reasons why you should NOT use Adobe Flex for your next RIA project.
(And how Gaia compares on those issues... Let the war begin! ;)

A lame misrepresentation of Flash/Flex from a lame Ajax framework developer.
polterguy replied ago:
Impressingly constructive, "did your _husband_ help you write that sentence"...?

The author's knowledge on the subject is pretty minimal. This sentence sums it up "Action Script (or whatever it's called today)". I'll take it point by point:
1. so what?
2. yah, and? 90% client reach is good enough for any business.
3. you can build your site in html and still be practically invisible on google. It all depends where your hands are growing from.
4. flash hasn't been around for 15 years. "Action Script (or whatever it's called today)" is based on ECMAScript, the same thing JavaScript is based on.
5. Silverlight has nothing to do with Flex, as it's a competitor to Flash, not Flex, the framework.
6. again, author's understanding of Flex really shines. Flex is just a fancy way of building Flash applications. Whatever security applies to Flash applies to Flex. If you really wanna measure whose dick is longer, Flash was kicking around way before Microsoft invented AJAX (no, not Google).
7. So is Windows... does that mean we shouldn't develop for it?
Regardless of how good Gaia is, this is a pretty poorly written article.

Yeah, I'm not impressed either. Aside from the rampant literary issues, which make the article more difficult to read, it's still kind-of a myopic view. Flex provides a ton of functionality that you just can't get out of a pure DHTML application. Also, name recognition is a pretty safe (usually) measurement of the reliability of a framework. Everyone has seen Flex, but I've never heard of Gaia before.
polterguy replied ago:
Well, you HAVE heard of Gaia now ;)
Regarding "richness of UI"... Why don't you code in WinForms then?
I've never said that Gaia would be able to do everything Flex would be able to do, all I've said is that you can have an Open Source and Standardized platform from the BOTTOM AND ALL THE WAY TO THE ROOF!
Flex is ActiveX 2.0 or Java Applets 2.0 if you like ;)
It always have been and it always will be!

If you build a good framework, users will come.
However, you will not get users by writing blog posts trashing other frameworks, or in this case, other design systems. Especially considering your last post trashing ASP.NET AJAX showed that you had never really invested any time into working with it. Telling people they have to edit their webconfig is no reason not to use it. The web.config for my current application is about 10 pages long. Whats a few more paragraphs? :)
All you will succeed in doing is be laughed out of the community. And the ASP.NET community is already small enough as it is.

I am sorry for being too busy answering other comments at my blog to be able to answer this one before now...
First of all; We don't make the rules, we've just finally figured out how to PLAY by them...
Second of all; To compare Gaia with ASP.NET AJAX is basically like comparing dog pooh and diamonds due to the fact of that they're both carbon based, when that's said we are in the unfortunate position that we HAVE to compare us against the alternatives being first of all one of the smallest actors around and second of all having a gazillionth of their marketing budgets...
And regarding being "laughed out of the ASP.NET community" we've had more registered users the last 2 days than what we have ever had before!
Our web-servers have basically CAUGHT FIRE...!

I voted negative just because this was an advertisement.
The points were great, I even agree with many of them. I'll consider looking at Gaia on a project which I was previously looking at Flex. But negative vote because this is an advertisement hidden in an article.

I voted against for the same reasons, and also because I see that close to half of the 'votes up' are all from GAIA people...
