Thanks to Jan Wedekind for letting me know that the Ruby Association, a formal Ruby promotion group chaired by Matz himself, has chosen a winner in the Ruby Logo Contest. The winning logo is by Tom Schaub and licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license.

Pretty bad icon...

While I agree that it is an ugly logo, this brings an interesting point up.
Ruby developers tend to be very vocal about the opinion, to the point of being assholes. I thought it was usually just pointed at other developers, but here they even turn on their own. Its rather sad and unprofessional.
They also tend to be followers, I figure that if the first 5 posters were appreciative of the logo, then the remaining comments would not be as harsh.
I'm not sure why Ruby people are this way, perhaps it is a carry over from the fact that many of them are also Apple people, as the attitudes are similar.
Thumbs Up for Ruby, thumbs down for the fanbase.

Meh. I know bashing Ruby and Apple are in vogue these days, and sure, there are Ruby developers who are opinionated ass-holes. But you'll find the same with PHP (http://terrychay.com/blog/), Java (http://www.bileblog.org/), and pretty much any other language.
Over the last few years, I've done development on various projects in PHP, Java, .NET and Ruby, and I've spent a fair bit of time on community sites. I honestly haven't noticed any more opinionated assholes in the Ruby community than any other. I think what we're seeing here is more of an Internet thing (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19) than anything specific to one community.

I don't frequent the PHP or Java communities much. But I have found that Ruby people are more vocal than either of those.
I guess I'm just used to the .NET communities, where people are nice to each other. Probably because we just don't have tons of time to write opinionated flame bait blogs.

I haven't found the Ruby community to be this at all, it's one of the things I really like about Ruby, it's friendly, well educated (about programming), helpful community.
I think a lot of people look at the Rails community and apply what they see to the whole Ruby community. Which is hardly fair, because they are very different. Not that I dislike the Rails community, they are what they are and certainly not everyone's cup of tea, but they are fine.
I think you'll find that Ruby (and Apple, since you mentioned them) people are passionate, which you don't see in every development community. But, truthfully, if they weren't, no one would of ever heard of Ruby, because unlike Java, or .net, there is neither a huge corporation pushing it, nor a multi-million dollar ad campaign.
Sometimes passion, with the anonymity of the Internet, brings out the worst in people; which isn't good, certainly, but it is prevalent.

yuck. The old logo was sooo cool. Just like Beryl->Compiz, why did they ever change that?
lol@FlySwat good observation
