Sun should be thankful to Google that they reanimate their J2ME thingy.

Um...Android does NOT use J2ME. It is a home cooked thing from Google. I can see why Sun is worried. However, I really don't see the "gPhone" taking off at all.

The problem isn't the "gPhone", but the next step which will be Google forcing their non-compliant "Java" onto users' machines through their search engine (possibly without informing those users that they're being "upgraded") in similar fashion to websites pushing new Flash players onto your machine automatically.
That way Google can effectively push Sun out of the Java market by forcing anyone writing Java software to use Google's implementation instead or face angry customers complaining that their software "doesn't work" despite them having "the latest JVM" on their machines.

The problem is, the API and runtime look pretty dated and poor, so could be a serious barrier to porting current Java applications. I don't care how smart Google think they are, forking always causes problems, the inadequate progress of Linux provides ample evidence for this!

I'd rather have 2-3 powerful, well integrated Java mobile platforms rather than a crippled pseudo standard.

I think this is a good thing. Sun moves too slow.
