what would a standard compliant IE8 mean for web developers? Call me cynical, but I honestly don't think it will mean all that much for a long long (long long long long) time, and lets look at why I believe that.

A standards compliant IE will mean better web experience for everyone using IE as well as people not using IE...

I commend Microsoft whole heartedly if IE 8 is standards compliant when it is released. But

(standards compliant) != good

Other factors must be taken into account. We'll have to wait and see.

A standards compliant IE means I'll still have to keep hacks for IE6 and 7, so its just as good as if IE just ripped off one of the other rendering engines.

Wow, what a negative post. Although nobody's happy with the history of IE, if they move towards standards compliance, that is a Good Thing.
