I'd like to add that predicting the future is hard, and even harder when your product schedules are 6-12 months, or longer! Not that way in all industries, but some still do waterfall with 12 month projects. Iterative development or implementing all or just some best practices from Agile with 30 day iterations or less can help alleviate some of the problems associated with predicting the future. I don't know about you, but I'm no Nostradomus myself.
