Though the effort of creating your own test harness is a good way to learn more about your app and perhaps a new language like Groovy, I'd recommend the following links to get into further testing with Groovy

I tend to agree with you. If you are doing serious testing, one should have some serious tools. This post is intended to show how to setup a lightweight testing tool when you are under time pressure.

Marty, that is precisely one of Groovy's advantages =-) it helps you get up to speed even if you are new to the language, as I'm sure you have experienced while baking your own solution because of time pressures, if done with Java it would have taken you a bit more, and it wouldn't be as expressive. I hope you continue exploring Groovy.

Groovy is really nice; it's the only language that has made me even consider laying off of Perl :-)
