I admit I find it immensely amusing that the Python version of this is sitting at 17 up and 1 down one while the Perl one is at 4 up 6 down.

I am guessing the Python folks modded it down.

It's odd, I wouldn't think Python folks would be like that. In the small amount of time that I've been involved with Python, I've never seen that sort of attitude.

On the other hand, I did see some of those parody vids from a Ruby fansite (they were a little smarmy but amusing at the same time), and I remember that they portrayed Python as being on the same level of "cool" as Ruby, and they hungout together. So maybe its Ruby fans, who don't dislike Perl but just like Python better?

Maybe its just me, but dzone seems fairly java dominated site. Ruby and Python both have JVM implementations. Perl is something of an outsider in these circles.

Perl is an outsider in most circles these days! Pity, since it's how I make my living. Perl6 and Parrot will come eventually (yes, yes, before anyone pounces on this, I know it's taking FOREVER) and we'll see if that has any effect (if it does, I suspect it'll take a while). I'm giddily excited about it and that hasn't abated despite the time. Nonetheless, good posts spacebat. I just wish folk could be a little less "not my language and so it's bad". Nature of the beast I suppose.

spacebat: Your observation about the heavy Java coverage on dzone is spot on. It's a really good site but the info often just isn't varied enough to meet developers needs who use languages other than java. When you navigate to the zones one can immediatedly notice that the .net zone link isn't shown you have to type the url in. That's just one example.
