I recently presented at the Philly JUG. In my presentation , I asked the question, "Is J2EE dead?", half-kidding, but mostly serious.

Typical sensational headline but if you actually read what he wrote it's not that controversial.

The linked video lost my vote. It's clearly a convenient setup to blast J2EE and allow the other frameworks to shine. It's a shame. Generally I agree that RoR and similar frameworks are way more fun to develop with, create cleaner code, more testable code and are generally more effective for developing web applications (runtime performance and deployment nightmare aside). The problem with this video is that tends to reduce itself to weak cheap-shot arguments that are both unrealistic and unnecessary.

The comments at the blog point this out, but there is a big difference between J2EE 1.4 and Java EE 5 (yes, even the name changed to be simpler). The developers of Java noticed the writing on the wall that so many people were using Spring/Hibernate/etc., and responded. So even if J2EE is dead, Java EE is alive...
