This page lists the proposed features in Java 7 and information about them. At this point, no Java 7 JSR has been created. So, consider this a list of possible features and libraries, not the actual future contents of Java 7. I formerly published a weekly roundup of discussion on what’s been added to this page.

Who needs Java 7? Most companies use Java 5. Arnold, Gosling, Holmes haven't even updated their book for Java 6 (http://www.amazon.com/Java-TM-Programming-Language-4th/dp/0321349806).

I seem to remember people saying that about Java 5 when it came out...
And Java 6 didn't have a whole lot in terms of updates (as least from a typical programmer's point of view), so I don't think you can expect every book out there to be republished for it. In fact, as far as I know they aren't even coming out with a new SCJP exam for it.

There are even some who use 1.4 or 1.3, but that sorta misses the point. A few years down the road most companies will probably use 1.7. Personally I'm actually fine with 1.4's features, but the performance improvements of 1.5 and 1.6 are more than welcome.

The G1 GC and tiered compilation for example look pretty promising.

re: who needs Java 7?

Wrong question. The question is "what will Java 7 look like?" and "who decides?", and this page answers that.

You will eventually see Java 7 so it is a chance to get a preview and understand the choices / debates. If you choose to do so. If you prefer not to, why click on this link at all (or vote it down) ?
