running multiple tomcat by using a single catalina_base and catalina_home this will make it easy to manage server management to use only one tomcat setup instance

What's the advantage of this setup?

I see two: 1) disk space economy (doubtful) and 2) an easier way to keep Tomcat distribution updated. Anyway, there's nothing wrong with that. Still I prefer multiple CATALINA_HOME instances.

hi,
it is really easy to maintain: same file system & same configuration files with just a single system property diffrence, it should be prefered if you are clustering a simple web application in a single server/filesystem
