Perhaps due to its ubiquitous presence in web based email services, implementing asynchronous site navigation is frequently a design requirement when building AJAX based sites. Unfortunately, the also ubiquitous UpdatePanel is chosen to accomplish this far too often.

I'd agree that drag and drop coding is bad, but this isn't really about that. You'd have a pretty difficult time putting and entire site in an UpdatePanel using the visual editor. I've just found a lot of people going to great lengths to create somewhat complex backends to accomplish this, not understanding how crippled their frontend will be.
