Two years ago, in 2006, there were essentially two viable Ruby implementations: Matz's Ruby 1.8.x codebase, and JRuby. At the time, JRuby was just barely starting to run Rails. I consider that a sort of "singularity" in the lifetime of an implementation, the inflection point at which it becomes more than a toy. (OT: these days, I consider the ability to run Rails faster than Matz's Ruby a better inflection point, but we've had the Rails thing going for two years).
