I am not a prude, what I am is a disciple of Jesus Christ, a better than average Java Enterprise developer and a positive advocate of the JavaLobby & DZone websites. This post is in bad taste and makes me sad due to all the time I have spent trying to get my peers to use the JavaLobby family of websites. I am not judging the person who posted the article, just dissapointed.
am sure rick dint intend to cause any harm by this, he only expected it to be funny and you are expected to be mature enough to to catch the geeky fun in it, discard the other details and then move on. "To a pure minded man, all things are pure".
On one hand, this is a community driven site. Votes decide what bubbles to the top, and what sinks to the bottom. If you don't like it, then you're on the wrong site. If content such as this is being voted upon by the majority of your peers in the software community, perhaps you're in the wrong business. At the very least, it would indicate that you are the minority. Software development is a blue collar career. It's the construction site, the automotive garage, of the software world. It's just how it is. I'm not saying that it's going to be like this forever. But it will be so long as the percentage of females graduating from CS programs is less than 12% (and declining IIRC) -- and so long as we demand to wear jeans to work.
On the other hand... I am actually surprised that this was posted by Rick. I can understand how it puts us in an uncomfortable spot, both morally and professionally. If this were posted by anyone else, I would probably vote it up. It's funny, geek humor. But I do tend to agree that leadership has a responsibility that makes things like this difficult. While I DO NOT think this warrants a retraction or apology, I'm personally on the fence with this one. I can't vote either way. :-/
That said, I find countering this content by pitching (any) religion to be equally offensive. Together, religion, sex and politics make up "the wedge". If one doesn't belong here, then none of them do.
As a community, DZone/Javalobby will decide. Let's call this Test #1.
Clinton, I am no different than anyone else here! This is very clever and very geeky humor, and I think it is completely fine for DZone. The mere fact that we see such strident objections is tantamount to proof that more developers need to let their hair down and spend a little time "away from keyboard."
Anyway, don't be surprised that this was posted by me. I LOVE a good joke, and this most assuredly is one.
"Specifically, you can see her nipples" ~ line from Scrooged... ;-)
In all fairness Rick, as much as I appreciate the humor here, this is NSFW.... On almost any client site that I've ever worked, this would yield a trip to the HR office at the very least, or an exit in the worst case scenario. As a consultant, it would surely be the latter for me.
Whether you like it or not, you are not the same as everyone else here. You are the leader. More than anyone, you decide the direction this site takes. Your fellowship will go forth and do likewise.
This is totally cool Rick. I'm not saying this is a bad direction, I'm just saying I wouldn't read it at work....
Perhaps an explicit NSFW flag (set by *readers*) would help satisfy everyone? Certainly censorship is not the answer, but there's nothing wrong with organization. ;-)
OK, I have to buy the idea that there are places this would be sufficient to get you into trouble, and that's honestly the last thing I would ever want DZone to do! I will mark the title "possibly NSFW" and then go weep for a while that it could be so.
Are you seriously trying to suggest that this picture of a fully clothed woman in a silly t-shirt makes DZone unsafe for you to kill time while at work? I could never survive in such a restrictive environment.
I have no idea if it could get me in hot water or not. What I can say though, is that if the head of HR happened to monitor my surfing logs, I would rather them not come across such a picture.
Some of you guys are way too serious. This shirt was clever in an ultra-geeky way. I thought it was very funny and well worth posting, although I knew there would be those who would object.
For those who suggest this is NSFW, you really must be in a straight-laced and uptight workplace! They show more revealing and far less clever images than this on prime time television every night of the week.
I am not in a "straight-laced" or in an "uptight" work environment. If that woman wasn't so endowed, would that post have been made? Absolutely not. I standby my initial gut reaction to the "humor post", I am disappointed. Other people are saying to loosen up, it's just a joke. A joke to who, women developers? - developers going through puberty? What this post/article did do for me was show the professional / maturity level (or lack there of) of the members of this community. I still greatly enjoy the JavaLobby family of sites and I will still continue to be a postitive contributor when I can. What some of you may not know, employers do internet searches for potential candidates. I do the same thing when I am looking for developers - I like to see what they are contributing to the Java community. Could I hire someone into the workplace that approves of the "humor" of the t-shirt?

Rick, what makes you think that is appropriate? I am disappointed as well.

No developer content and posted by a Zone leader - excellent direction Dzone, you'll be Reddit/Digg/Fark in no time.

I love it! There are cases where bloat in XML is ok :) Some folks just need to loosen up and not be at work all the time, geez.
kenman replied ago:
I think that might be part of the problem; DZone is (was?) one of the few places I could count on to safely kill time while at work.

There's an error in the markup: the root node should be a child node of <fake></fake>

Touché, kenman - excellent retort!

I voted it down because of all of the floating div offers that poppep up. I didn't check; do they have shorts, too?
