Last Thursday I tweeted: “I strive to maintain an open mind when nontechnical people talk about the ‘Internet OS’ or ‘Web OS’. Sometimes it's tough.” I got some grumbles by email and I think the subject is worth more discussion. Let me be more specific: Neither the Internet nor the Web is much like an OS. And even if it were, that’d be the wrong way to think about what’s going on right now.

I'm glad that someone has said this at last, and at least it's from a reputable source. The first two points are the most important - it's about the people, it's about the information.

There has been a lot of talk about the Web completely replacing desktop applications of any sort but it's all ridiculous since the web server software itself must run and interact with some host os which in turn must interact with hardware so the 'web os' can continue to run. Most of this wishful thinking comes from a disease known as 'architechture astronaut' syndrome. The web is an application the tcp/ip stack tells us as much.
