Of course, $199 isn't the real price, from either side. But nobody cares. In the UK, the cheapest you'll manage is £99 ($194) for the 8GB handset, plus 18 months x £30 ($59) equals £639 ($1250).

The only thing lame about the contracts are the exclusivity deals. Everything else is standard fare with a lot of phone providers.

I think that the lame factor quite much depends on the consumers wallet size. I would say that this is one of the most expensive gadgets that I've seen, but if 1200 dollars plus some is peanuts, then it's not an issue of course.. :-)

except that the £30 a month also buys you talk time, could get you cheap broadband and shouldn't really be factored in the the TCO as a whole entity.
