I’ve been out of college for 3 years now, and held 3 VERY different programming jobs since graduating with my Bachelor’s Degree. I am hoping to shed some light on what I have learned about the "real world" and clear up some misconceptions.

One thing you should learn in college is how a computer actually works :) I mean maybe doing everything in Java is not such a good thing at a time when students should learn the fundamentals.

Yes, that is part of working outside of your comfort zone. Learn your circuits, understand what is going on. Don't just memorize.
