I’m so happy! I finally figured out how to make a transparent favicon. It seems like not a month goes by that I hear from some Joe’s Goals user who tells me how much they really like the application and use it daily, but would really like it if I could just fix one little thing: the favicon.

i do not get it how a tutorial about transparent-gifs is regarded as fresh links for developers. Graphics Interchange Format is around since 1987. And just reading the spec which is always the nicest but not freshest link for developers is http://www.w3.org/2005/10/howto-favicon. And if you would read it you would see that even png can be supported. So i do not even have to use crappy 1-bit transparency. Of course this is not really necessary for 16x16px. Anyway the point is, making a 16x16px gif with transparency is neither fresh nor for developers.
No offence, but please, go to myspace if you have to post such "news".

A transparant favicon is an important detail that a lot of site administrators seem to forget about.

Also, getting a favicon that works in all browsers is a little tougher than just throwing a gif out there. IE6 supports favicons when you bookmark a link, but not all icons work in IE6. I've had similar troubles in IE7 as well.

Finally, this article is not just about transparent gifs, it's about actually creating an icon using whatever tool the guy quoted.

I personally like the online favicon generator here: http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/

Most developers focus on programming, not on aesthetics

Your complaint would be more valid on a web / graphic designer community site
