When generics first came out I was pretty excited. I had used templates quite extensively in C++, before I soured on C++. C++ templates are a great idea, but way too complicated for what they do (you could say that about any number of features in C++). In fact, had they been simpler to use and reason about I might still be using C++.

IMHO Java Generics is broken, else way you need to suppress warnings on perfectly valid code? I think that type erasure was a mistake and should be addressed in a reasonable way and compatible way in java 7 (different bytecodes?).

limited - yes. But way better than no generics at all (forgot to mention the enhanced for loop). On one hand the author complains about Java not being strongly typed enough, on the other he's moving to Groovy and other dynamic languages... hmmm... is me or is it the author that is confused?
