Then I started lurking on #scala on IRC for a few weeks. Immediately I was surprised by the snarky comments of some of the top chatters on IRC. Mostly it was a negative comment about this person or a snide remark about that language. At one point I got into an argument with a couple guys after I mentioned that I use ruby & jruby as my staple language at the moment. The closed mindedness and arrogance was amazing coming out of the chat. I would guess that’s typical of religious monoglot language zealots. Whatever.

All IRC chat rooms are like that, regardless of the topic.

You can see how the blog author behaves in this IRC transcript:

You should really read the full transcript on James Iry's blog (linked previously) before you make a judgement on this. To be honest, I don't think I would have had as much patience as the ones on the IRC channel who are accused of being "snarky" and "arrogant".

Factually speaking, dysinger was very wrong; worse, he refused to accept clear evidence thereof. I can't speak to his other experiences in the channel, such as his Ruby conversation or the (now) infamous Haskell discussion, but from what I've seen, I'm not inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

It's one thing for Zed Shaw, who wrote the mongrel app server to call out a community that makes extensive use of his code, and quite another for someone just learning the language to call out a community because he feels they were rude to him in a chat WHEN HE WAS IN FACT WRONG about how equals() works in java. He never actually admitted he was wrong, even when confronted with the source code which was precisely contrary to his statement.

Hmm...so some obviously obnoxious guy throws a bunch of tantrums after losing face on IRC. Interesting? Nah. Any chance we can get back to discussing programming?

@tjweir I agree I didn't behave well when I thought I was right nor after I was swore at. I said in my blog article that I didn't have good behavior.
@daniel I was only trying to say that you over-ride equals and hashCode in java together per the javadoc. I did make one wrong statement because my java is rusty after 2 years on ruby. I admitted it later on 3 blogs including my own.
@bwtaylor saying I am not Zed Shaw therefore I don't have a right to an opinion of my own is not worth arguing with you about.
@mattrussell @killerweb yes I was already ticked off about guys in the chat room saying things like "my 7 year old can program haskell better than most java devs" and "ruby is crap"
@dibblego oh the irony - since you hang out on #scala on IRC, thanks for confirming the title of my blog post. I wont call you any names in return because I would rather this be over with.

More proof that scala devs think they are the ultimate -> james iry blogs about doing lambda factorial in java using anonymous classes but then the discussion in the chat he calls java and perl devs "blue collar"

I have updated the article with code.
