New features in the latest release of Eclipse -- the free and increasingly popular Java™ integrated development environment -- make it competitive not only with other free IDEs, but also with proprietary, commercial offerings such as IntelliJ IDEA. This article briefly compares the features, ease of use, and stability of Eclipse and IDEA, and then provides a guide for programmers who are considering switching or who simply want to try out Eclipse to see what all the fuss is about.

Kind of an old article, but pretty good.

There's no point in reading this unless you want IBM to tell you to use Eclipse instead of competitors products :)

This article might has well been Oracle evaluating DB2, SQL Server, MySQL etc. vs. Oracle DB in terms of bias.
Daniel, you been posting up a lot of articles written by IBM lately...didn't think you worked for them! This article is so old; if memory serves me correctly, IntelliJ 4.x was the current version when this article was written(IntelliJ 6.x) is current. And for sure Eclipse has changed.
EJB 2 Entity Beans could have still been in vogue when this article was written...
Lowell Heddings replied ago:
If you look at Daniel's submitted links, he's only posted 2 articles from IBM's developer site... hardly basis for an accusation.
jola_zm replied ago:
If you look at what sjlum is saying, it's that an IBM article comparing Eclipse to competing products will be totally biased hence his Oracle example
I think it's more lame b/c of it's age...both Eclipse, IntelliJ nor most products weren't the same products that they were 2 / 3 years ago.
He's got valid points in his complaint -- dzone shouldn't just be about defending your friends as your response seems to indicate.
Lowell Heddings replied ago:
I was specifically commenting about his claim that Daniel might be working for IBM, and the fact that said claim was baseless.
The article is definitely lame for being old, even if Daniel is my friend, and the complaints are justified.

It's Christmas week. The target audience is off gorging on turkey and showing off their new ipods. The people who blog know traffic is going to be pitiful this week and are holding back their good stuff for after the new year. If you take a look at what's going on in upcoming links you should be grateful you got "a developer's guide to evaluating Eclipse v. IntelliJ IDEA" instead of "programming serial ports in Turbo Pascal."
Shoot, by Sunday, even seeing how they programmed serial ports back in the 80s might be head and shoulders above the other choices available...
Merry Christmas!

This article was from 2004.

No argument, this is a really old article, I just thought it was interesting.
@whiners:
Everyone has a bias. If IDEA wrote an article comparing IntelliJ to Eclipse I'd probably post that too. It's interesting seeing comparisons from different sides. :-)
jola_zm replied ago:
If you posted that article and it was written in 2004, you'll again deserve complaints :)
You should certainly be held to a higher standard; you are being paid for this.
daniel replied ago:
Actually, I'm not getting paid to do anything regarding dzone.com, I just do it because I enjoy it. :-) My job is as an editor for EclipseZone.
jola_zm replied ago:
The creators of Dzone are also the creators of EclipseZone, but you are only paid for EclipseZone... ;-) gotcha. Your technicality makes perfect sense.
