OmniFaces has recently looked into the least intrusive way (i.e. no custom component/tag/renderer boilerplate necessary) to add HTML5 specific >, >, > and > attributes like placeholder, autofocus, type="range", etcetera to standard JSF components.

Very nice and straightforward to use! JSF 2.2 is supposed to come with something quite like this, but that's still some time away. This looks like the perfect solution to bridge that period.
