I'll agree that for the most part, annotations are overused and horribly applied. However, as the only real meta-language available to Java, they're a necessary evil.

The thing is, there are so many possible good uses for them. I should blame alot of the evil on the tool vendors (and Sun). While hanging out at the Spring conference (updates on the same blog), I've seen some good uses, that actually make AOP better, and some bad, configuring request paths for MVC controllers.
Maybe, it's just that it is such a simple thing that can have sooo much power
