I was sitting down with one of our most productive software developers for his annual review, trying to carefully craft my words. You see, Tyler had produced some amazing results that year in tackling our most difficult assignments. Praising him was easy… almost too easy.

Summary of article:
Q: Are cocky developers worth it?
A: Yes, as I once gave him a mild ticking off but his superior skills meant there was no way in hell I could fire him.

Cocky developers are NOT worth it. You can always train someone new technical skills, but usually cannot train them in proper human behavior. A cocky developer on a team is like a cancer that should immediately be cut out. I have worked with small & large teams, small & large companies and my experience so far has been: the good of the many out weigh the good of the one (okay, cheesy Star Trek line, but still has truth to it).
