When selecting technologies for concrete projects, his point is well taken. How many times have you selected new, compelling technologies on a project, only to find that they distract from your main goal, or that you even end up back at the "boring" languages or libraries that you should have started with at the beginning? This, in my experience, is especially true of larger teams with eclectic backgrounds, where more common ground is needed and unfamiliar tools become all-too-convenient topics of group debate.
