There were days when UML tools were expensive and only few commercial ones were available. But, now the market is flooded with several commercial and opensource uml tools. While choice is good, but too much choice is also bad. It has become difficult to evaluate and select the best one. In this article I present my handpicked collection of best open source UML tools.

Unfortunately, most free UML tools are incomplete, buggy and not user- friendly.

True. My personal favorite starts at 99$ for a version I consider usable from its features. It's not free or open but it's the most intuitive, stable and complete UML tool I could find for years. All open source UML tools just cannot keep up with it, sad as it is.

Ya, its true that most open source UML tools are buggy, I think instead of complaining we should contribute to to make it more stable and better.

I use violet.
It's limitated, but for fast class drawings it is ok for me.
Unfortunately, it seems no more maintained...

Hey, violet seems to be a nice tool for UML 'drawings'. Thanks!
