I used to like C++ a lot. It was a very simple, efficient language, and you could always say exactly how the code you're writing mapped to your CPU.

C++ was never a "very simple, efficient language, and you could always say exactly how the code you're writing mapped to your CPU". Well, I agree it is relatively efficient compared to some other languages. The statement is about C++ written as "more C than C++ - sprinkled with some syntactic sugar". Ouch.
