I recently engaged in a bit of a debate about billing practices for freelance developers. I was shocked to learn that the person I was debating with found my billing method deceptive and unfair to the client. I’ve specifically employed the method of billing that I use because I thought it was the fairest method I could offer the client!

I have done work both ways. Flat rate is fie for fixed projects, but hourly is a better way all round when the client wants flexibility or is not experienced. For a flat rate you need a client that is experienced enough to know hwo t do requirements that are workable.

So in the end how you bill depends on what kind of client you are dealing with.
