A PDF resume is so 1999 it's not even funny anymore. "If you're in this industry and I don't care if you're a graphic designer, engineer, SEO whizkid, QA person, copywriter or PPC management expert, there is simply no excuse for not having a personal/company blog."

Silly criteria for excluding candidates. How about favorite IDE? Music interest?

What if you have a cool open source project but no blog. Are you out? What if you're great at writing but suck at coding? They're independent skills and unless writing prose is essential to the position for which you're hiring, it probably shouldn't be too high on the list as a reason to pass over a candidate.

that is sad, people that do interviews are getting more stupid every day, if they dont know how to test what person knows they should just see how much job experience person has and dont ask stupid question or just google some question (best with answers, so they wont look stupid)

p.s. you should also watch popular tv shows and sports.

I wouldn't hire 95% of the bloggers _because of_ their blog.

While I totally disagree with having an employer choose someone mostly because of their blog, I see the point the author is trying to make. I've seen so many people who just write total B.S. on their resume, putting buzzwords and skillsets that they're not particularly good at, but probably heard / read from someone that it's something good, while they memorize most of them for the interview. The software development industry is a rapidly-changing one. Having and maintaining a blog shows commitment and a desire to continue improvement, and shows a ton of initiative.

In short, it's a good criteria to analyze, but there are way more important things to find out about a prospective employee to see if they're right for the job.

raveman - Good luck

dzonelurker - Exactly!

degeneratepr - Resumes are worthless these days. A resume as well as a list of references are far too easy to "fake". Plus I found skills are far more important than experience in a particular technology. Technologies and frameworks change. Identifying a code ninja vs an application developer is far more important. Yes we give candidates an IQ test, followed by problem solving questions. All things being equal, the one with the blog demonstrating big picture thinking gets the job.
