It is now time for Java Developers to Stop, Look, Listen and Live! The climate is changing. Java the language is entering middle age. Java is not the first language that developers are picking up. These days when I talk to young non-Microsoft developers, a lot of them don’t know Java and have no plans to learn it either. Dynamic and functional languages are on the rise. The web IS a viable platform for business.

Don't get me wrong: dynamic languages bring in a lot of fresh ideas and they are on the rise...but in smaller shops. In anything bigger even medium, it's usually Java that is king. And those young developers will pick up Java in no time when they realize J2EE or WebSphere skills pay a LOT MORE than knowledge of Ruby on Rails. Money talks.

So, I'll stick to my Java job that pays my mortgage and feeds my family.
Haven't seen a single opening for Groovy or Ruby yet that pays a decent salary.

Jacek, I think you missed the point. No one is saying move off Java the Language but more embrace Java The Platform. Java The Language has got a lot of new friends our there to help in the form of Groovy and Scala that all reduce down to bytecode that can be consumed by the JVM.

As for sticking to Java The Language simply because it pays lots of money, good for you!
