Java-coded applications are subject to memory leaks, despite widespread beliefs to the contrary. They're possible--but not inevitable. Good programmers aim to eliminate leaks entirely, and, with a little practice and the right tools, that aim is achievable. Use of the tools seems to involve a large component of personal style, though, so find ones that fit you well.
