The whole mentality that Wicket can't scale and must look ugly just isn't true. Here is a list Wicket Sites that break the status quo.

Wicket is indeed a very nice framework. One concern I have about wicket in public websites is its absolutely meaningless URLs. For example,

http://www.adscale.de/?wicket:interface=modal-dialog-pagemap:1:28::::

I'm not very comfortable with Wicket so do correct me if there is a way to avoid this.

Yes, bookmarkable or "friendly URL-s" are possible by "mount"-ing pages:
