Short of finding someone who has both the degree and the experience would you hire someone with a degree and no experience or someone with experience but no degree?
Is there a rational behind the equivalency of a degree with certain number of years of experience?

This is garbage. As mentioned in my comment, it's about aptitude, not education. Whether you teach yourself or you go to school for it, if you have the aptitude, you'll understand the how, why and what you're doing. If you don't, you'll follow recipes that tell you how to get from point A to point B. I understood more in the 10th grade about software development than many of the people I work with (whom have advanced degrees).

You have displayed some soft of bias which makes the rest of your comment less than readable...

You seem to have taken this personally! Would you tell your son/daughter that wants to become a software engineer to “forget about college – you will be a better software engineer if you just start working – look at me, I am better than my colleagues with advanced degrees”?
