Windows ME? That wasn't that long ago. As a Mac user I've been using multiple monitors almost a decade before that :P

Well, not really. Generally speaking two smaller monitors are better than a single large one when multitasking (be it with a GUI or command line). I've read about this previously and I can also confirm from personal experience.
