It seems to me that every tech environment I've ever worked in has at least one resident old-timer (length of time on the job, not the person's age) who gives everyone the illusion that the infrastructure would fall apart if he were to leave the company. Mark my words: everyone is replaceable.

Naive, you better have surveyed their domain and knowledge base, kept them unawares, and backed up _everything_ beforehand or you could have nasty surprises after they leave.

Any smart old-timer would be hard to keep unawares and would not take kindly to the arrogant people as commodities mindset :-P
