Often, I find the DZone Popular links feed a bit flooded. I subscribe to it, to follow interesting developer discussions, but sometimes I find, that a post gets to be considered “popular” a bit too easily. More likely, what makes a post “popular” is a quite individual matter, which calls for a more personalized way to get the dzone feed. Yahoo Pipes to the rescue! I have used it, to create a mashup of the feed, where I apply filtering on the number of votes, comments and clicks. And you can use it too.

I admire the effort, jeyben, and Yahoo Pipes is pretty amazing. Still, we're about to release some personalization tools which may provide you with an easier and more effective way to filter the fire hose and get more of what you really want. Please stay tuned.
PS - I would love it if you could figure out how to use Yahoo Pipes to make it easier for people to VOTE ON NEW LINKS! That is chronically the most distressing problem in this "community" - the hige number of people who simply don't participate in making the social filter work.

rick: I've commented about this before, when dzone was asking what could be done to help increase the number of voters. I've even emailed a dzoner, but got no answer.
There are two big reasons and some small ones why I don't vote a lot on dzone, while I vote *a lot* on reddit:
1) I don't stay logged in. When will this problem be fixed? Are your cookies relying on static IP's or something? Just guessing, since it works for some and I do have a dynamic IP. This is a major problem obviously (not helped by the fact that logging in is slow - takes some time for the login lightbox to appear (especially compared to digg or reddit).
2) I have to hit "back" to vote. Just like on digg, where I don't vote a lot either. On reddit, the article is loaded in a frame, and a small horizontal box is shown on the top of the screen, which contains a link to the comments and voting arrows. This is *awesome*.
3) Voting is relatively slow (definitely compared to digg & reddit). This is a small problem, however.
4) When voting for comments, I can't undo my vote - e.g. if I erroneously hit "down" while meaning "up" (this happens a lot to me as I expect the "up" arrow to come first). Small problem, but I like reddit allows me to change any vote I make, whether on an article or on a comment.
Please, allow me to vote: fix the login issue, and an option on the settings page to enable a small horizontal frame on top of the article, so I don't have to go back (which is sometimes impossible; e.g. if I bookmark something and close the browser, when I come back to read it, I can't hit "back", obviously. I'd love to vote, but right now it's really annoying to do so.

Hi Ludo! If you are using firefox, I can recommend the firefox dzone extension, to fix the easy voting issue.

Thanks a lot! I am indeed a firefox user (ATM, webkit is looking more and more interesting, though), so this does indeed seem to fix problem #2, which is great. Thanks for pointing this out.

Hi Ludo. If you'll please email me matt at dzone.com, I'll try to resolve the login issue. We've learned a bit more about the problem, but are still not clear on it (it seems to spam browsers and platforms!). Separately, we are planning on letting people open a frame when they view a story. This will probably help. We also will probably add undoing your vote on comments. Thanks!

Hi Rick! When I did the pipe, I thought about the voting on new links issue too, as I also talk about in the last section called " What About Voting Then?" in the post. What I am hoping is, that I get some extra time, to look more at new links, cause I agree, voting is important or dzone is nothing. And only reading my piped feed with "popular posts" *is* selfish.
