I remember when the whole Ajax thing kicked in and JavaScript developers looked at Gmail, Gmaps, and the like and thought “I wonder what powers that?” Well, the power comes from Closure a library and set of tools that the great JS hackers built over time as they created the applications at scale. As soon as I joined Google I wanted to check out this code, and talked to a bunch of folks who were interested in open sourcing it. Well, these things take time, but now we are fortunate enough to have everything out there (interestingly, a lot of the code was open due to it being used in Google Doc).

The buzz surrounding Motorola's Droid, one of the most anticipated handsets to date, reached a deafening peak today. In an effort to compete with the iPhone, Motorola joined forces with Google and Verizon. Will the 'Force' be strong enough in the Droid? Well, since Motorola has to pay a fee to Lucasfilm just to use the term "Droid", they better get some 'Force' out of the deal. Star Wars references aside, the Droid has some interesting stories surronding it.

As the battle for Skype ends, Oracle's antitrust battle continues with new allegations of SAP's interference. Also, the WTO may have a case against blanket internet censorship. Those stories, plus DZone's top link for the weekend: "Best Open Source UML tools".

Lately there was allot of buzz around flash on iPhone. Apple’s incredible phone is on the market for over 2 year but still there is no native Flash Player for it’s OS. At this year's GSMA Mobile World Congress, 3 ½ hours were devoted to the topic of "Mobilizing Open Source", which was no doubt spurred in part by the increasing attention Google's open-source mobile operating system, Android, has drawn. While open-source products have, for the most part, been pushed into a corner and untouched in the enterprise due to lack of support, regular updates, and compatibility, the mobile market is a unique bird.
