Utilities vs Networks

It's interesting to see a network, Instagram, starting to replace the iPhone's native camera application in many users' daily usage of their phones. I see this in my kids' behavior all the time. When they want to take a photo, they open Instagram, not the camera application.

There are crazy days and then there are days like yesterday. Kickstarter has experienced some frantic hours but nothing like what happened in the 24-hour span between Wednesday at 6:54pm and Thursday at 6:44pm. Two million-dollar projects, a major political speech involving Kickstarter, an amazing band launching a project for a comeback 20 years in the making... the list goes on. Here's a minute-by-minute breakdown of the day's events.

Cloud Computing Gets Top Billing at Consumer Electronics Show

People pessimistic about the world economy can take heart from the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES) at Las Vegas, Nevada. Not only was the largest trade show in the Americas bigger than ever, it also managed to attract a record number of visitors. Over 153,000 footfalls were recorded over four days in January, flocking to stalls spread across 1.86 million square feet, or the equivalent of 32 football fields.

The Never Shrinking Result of Consistent Review

The problem with turning over rocks is that there’s usually ugly stuff hiding underneath. You retro every 2 weeks and you list out all the stuff that isn’t working. You diligently collect all the deltas and turn those into actions. You collect all the actions from your retro’s and your post-mortems and you track them in a tool where they sit… forever.

Web Standards

Several years ago, WebKit began including experimental CSS features in the open source project. Because the features were not officially part of the CSS standard, the developers of WebKit added the prefix -webkit to the experimental stylesheet declarations. This ensured they worked only in WebKit. Now, years later, the CSS Working Group is trying to reverse the "damage" done to the web by sites that use WebKit-specific features, suggesting that if it does not happen, "it will kill our standardization process."

A new exploit has been discovered that allows unauthorized access to a user’s Google Wallet account with a simple hack that can be performed by anyone in a matter of minutes. A security firm recently exposed a Google Wallet vulnerability that allowed hackers to bypass PIN protection, but the vulnerability is only present on rooted Galaxy Nexus handsets. This new exploit, however, does not require a handset to be rooted, which leaves all Google Wallet users exposed. Read on for more.
