Great Developers Are Hard To Find, Regardless of Language

Matt Aimonetti has a client that believes Rubyists don't scale. Sorry Matt, your client is wrong. It's as easy to hire great Ruby programmers as it is to hire great Java programmers or great programmers for any given popular language. The problem is, it's not easy to hire great programmers in any language. Worse, companies still think they need to hire one or two great programmers and a supporting cast of average programmers. As Martin Fowler pointed out, cheaper developers are actually more expensive than experts. To make things worse, if you end up with a NNPP or two you'll be headed in the wrong direction.

It's easy to get colours right, but it's even easier to get them wrong. In web design it is crucial that you make well-informed colour choices. It might sound far-fetched but your choices of colour in web design can make or break your online business. Websites that are aesthetically pleasing and well designed are the ones that get more hits, and a more likely to get returning business.

"Ever wondered how all those slick "magazine" themes for WordPress and other platforms were created? Many, if not all, were designed using a CSS Grid Framework - at least in essence if not in actual fact. That is, you can use an existing CSS framework or build your own from scratch. While it's possible to design complex web page layouts without a framework, it's arguably an act in masochism. In this article you'll get an overview of the current batch of Frameworks and which you should choose to use."

AppEngine: Batteries sold separately

At first glance, Google’s App Engine looks like a great way to build the next big web application; you get access to a massively scalable infrastructure, you get access to a huge existing authentication system, you get baked-in stats, you get all sorts of cool goodies.

Why not PHP for Google’s App Engine?

TechCrunch is announcing Google’s new “App Engine” service being launched this evening. The basic service is a full app stack hosted and managed by Google, providing a web framework (maybe I’m misreading this?) and the Google ‘big table’ database service. The web stack is Python, but there’s no word I’m seeing on whether it’s plain Python or if it’s based on an existing Python framework (like Zope or Django or something).
