3D desktop disappointment

There is a bug in Java (6429775). It seems like jdk6 doesn't handle Compiz nor Beryl correctly (Linux window managers.) The odd thing is that it is supposed to be fixed since jdk6u1 build 01 (approximately 12/14/06) but many have reported the bug after that to be alive, with different OSes and apps (they even stated NetBeans is broken because of this bug), but no reply has come nor has the bug been reopened.

Auto-scrolling is a feature that can be found in most mainstream modern applications. Pressing the middle mouse button transfers the application into the auto-scrolling mode. In this mode, moving the mouse down starts scrolling down the contents even when the mouse is no longer moving. This article introduces an effective approach to achieve auto-scrolling in Swing applications.

Static considered harmful?

Gilad makes the case that static, that staple of C++, C#/VB.NET, and Java, does not belong. I think Gilad conflates a few things, but he's also got some good points. To the dissecting table!

In addition to about twenty core Substance themes, the theme pack plugin provides even more themes to create a unique look for your Swing applications. When you put the binary plugin in the classpath, the additional themes become available in the getAllThemes() API, and you can use them just like any other core theme.

Excellent Groovy Tutorial

Groovy Tutorial by Dr. Paul King presented at Agile 2007. Covers several interesting topics like language features, builders, testing, data access, Grails. My favorite part is the gradual transition from Java code to Groovy using color highlighting.

Using Mylyn with Google Code

Using Mylyn to work on tasks in a project hosted at Google Code is pretty easy, thanks to the Generic Web Repository Connector created by Eugene Kuleshov. Although the connector provides a neat template for Google Code projects, I found that it still needs a little tweak to work properly.
