Firefox 3 represents a huge step forward in font support and text rendering. The new graphics layer has made it possible for Firefox 3 to support more languages (and therefore more localizations) than ever before.

That's certainly a massive improvement. Additionally font choosing for SVG was also fixed. With 2.x text inside SVGs was only rendered with a perfect match. I.e. if you specify a single physical font, which exists on that machine, which also happens to cover that range. As you can probably imagine this simply didn't work in many cases.

It's really cool that they're looking at text rendering this closely. It may not seem like much right now, but if this is the kind of polish v3 is receiving, it's going to be spectacular.
