Last week, Apache went public in a dispute with Sun concerning the terms under which they can obtain a free licence for Sun's Java Compatibility Testing Kit (JCK). They will regret posting that letter, for the following reasons:

This has got to be one of the most asinine articles that I have ever written. By obstructing an OSS project, Sun is simply *once again* demonstrating that it does NOT understand the OSS revolution. Furthermore, Sun is giving me yet another reason (not that I need another reason) to abandon Java and move to RoRails. When are Sun and their G_dDamned lackeys (e.g., the morons who moderated this article up) going to wake up and realize that actions such as these are simply *encouraging* developers to move to RoRails?? WHEN???

I meant to write, "This has got to be one of the most asinine articles that I have ever *read,*" not "that I have ever written." BTW, the "five minute edit" feature here on dZone needs some work. It is apparently buggy. I was unable to edit my comment in order to make this correction.

a well written piece, I must agree with Dave on this. Though I doubt it's the Apache foundation behind that "open letter", but rather a few interested parties in the Harmony team (IBM mainly) who've been trying for the better part of a decade to take control over Java away from Sun.
