Fast, out-of-the-box 3D on the web remains an elusive dream. Theatre Magique has an informative review of the most active 3D flash libraries (e.g. Papervision). He notes that while the applications are promising, the performance is still lacking, and that the much publicized 3D capability in Flash 10 (the next version currently in Beta) doesn’t really help.

Article written from the sulky point of view of a vendor trying to punt some obscure 3d plugin nobody uses. While it no doubt performs technically superior to 3d in flash, the fact is if investing time into creating a 3d experience for the web I'd rather limit its scope and have it accessable to the vast majority of the web population than have nobody view it because it requires installation of some oddball plugin.
