This book isn't about applets, it is about writing GUI in Flex and server-side (business logic) in Java. Instead of Java you could use .net or C++ server-side as well.

We have used Java+Flex tandem for more than 1.5 years in a big hospital system. Despite its nice things (like MXML or data binding) Flex has become real pain in the neck, and unfortunately it's not only my opinion, see http://www.dzone.com/links/why_flex_is_evil.html for example. I can name even more disadvantages of using Flex.

In my opinion combination Vaadin+GWT+HTML5 is the future. Vaadin got very good reputation recently at DZone: http://www.dzone.com/links/why_magnolia_cms_chose_vaadin_framework.html , http://www.dzone.com/links/extgwt_plain_gwt_extjs_or_vaadin_reasoning_by_mag.html
Flex/Flash/Applets are used in 95% for Ads and simple online games, and it's better to stay with this.
